Psychotherapy is a special relationship between an individual, family, or couple, and a licensed and trained professional, such as a psychologist, designed to define, understand, and resolve problems that negatively impact relationships, self-esteem and optimal living.
Psychotherapy differs greatly from a casual conversation with a 'good listener' or friend. A trained professional recognizes the common communication problems, thoughts, behaviors, attitudes and coping strategies that block people from making positive changes in their lives. Psychotherapy is not just a way to "fix" problems, but an endeavor to imbue life with meaning, to build strength and resilience to life's challenges, and to create happiness.
Generalized Anxiety: anxiety and worry that is uncontrollable about a number of events or situations
Panic Disorder: recurrent unexpected panic attacks (sudden severe onset of anxiety) accompanied by a number of physiological symptoms (e.g. heart palpitations, sweating, impending doom).
Social Anxiety: marked anxiety and fear about one or more social situations for which the person fears scrutiny by others
Inattention problems: paying close attention to details; sustaining attention and mental effort; not following through; organizing tasks; losing things; easily distractible
Hyperactivity/Impulsivity problems: physical restlessness; talking excessively; blurting out answers/statements; difficulty waiting one's turn; intruding on others
"Adulting" is a challenge when one persistently responds to triggering adult child-parent interaction patterns with the same reinforcing and painful behaviors. Learn to stop trying to get something from "out there" (especially from your parent) through a better relationship with yourself.
